By Kristin Kobes Du Mez
This book thoroughly explains why white-Evangelicalism is often racist, sexist & homophobic
I loved this book! It is a history book, well researched and lengthy, and ultimately super educational. Kristin looks at various popular writers, politicians, activists and people of prominence in American Evangelicalism & the broader culture from the last century or so. She has researched Billy Graham, James Dobson, John Wayne, Phyllis Schlafly, Oliver North, John Eldredge, Joshua Harris, Mark Driscoll, John Piper, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and so many others. She elaborated on Billy Graham ministries, Focus on the Family, Promise Keepers, the Vietnam war, the Cold war, communism and much more. She really paints a picture of where White-Evangelicalism has come from in America, and why it is the way it is.
I am Australian so this was extremely illuminating for me. I was raised in the Australian version of basically Evangelical-Christianity, and I had these vague notions that the Western church as a whole had perpetuated racism & sexism, and was obviously still homophobic, but this book explains exactly why and how the western church is still entrenched in racism, sexism and homophobia, not to mention why it is anti-abortion, militaristic and pro-Trump. Absolutely astounding!
Now, more than ever before in my life, I am becoming: anti-racist, feminist, queer-affirming, pro-choice-and-pro-life, anti-war Christian, and I am grateful for how this book has educated me!
